The Grand Domain of the District of Columbia, Knights of Pythias is the birthplace of the Knights of Pythias, with the founding of the first Pythian Lodge, Washington Lodge No. 1, on February 19, 1864.
In 1867, this Grand Lodge created the first provisional Supreme Lodge for our Order.
More than twenty centuries ago, in ancient Syracuse, were enacted the thrilling historical incidents which form the basis of the magnificent and impressive ritualistic ceremonies which once seen can never be forgotten. The sublime exemplification of true friendship on the plains of Sicily by Damon and Pythias,-two illustrious disciples of Pythagoras,-is the cornerstone of the splendid and colossal temple of Pythianism. The lofty principles, tenets and usages of this great organization tend to make men better, more friendly, charitable, benevolent and patriotic and promote the highest and best interest of mankind.Charles N.
